Composition of essential oils in bergamot mint grown under the conditions of South Moravia

Essential oil in bergamot mint, Mentha aquatica, was investigated under the conditions of South Moravia in the course of two years. The essential oil contained two main components - linalool and linalylacetate, whose share considerably exceeded the amount of other substances. Mutual ratio of both components changes during the vegetation. In the essential oil of young plants in the phase of branching and bud setting, linalool (39-48 % dominates over linalylacetate (25-37.5 % in the first and 32-43 % in the second harvest). Plants in the second year of vegetation and in the second harvest are characterized by a higher share of linalylacetate. Insertion of leaves affects the content of linalool and linalylacetate in essential oil - leaf pairs of the upper third of main stalk contain the most linalool in essential oil, linalylacetate dominates in essential of leaves of the lower third. Under Czechoslovak conditions, the highest linalool yield on a unit of area of experimental plots is in the period of bud setting, namely 270-450 g/100 m2, while the highest linalylacetate yield occurs at the beginning of flowering, 260-330 g/100 m2. We recommend warmest areas of Czechoslovakia for the cultivation of bergamot mint. It is useful to harvest it at the beginning of flowering to reach good quality of drug as well as good yields.
