The effect of nitrogen content on the rate and course of fermentation and nutrient losses and digestibility in wilted grass silage

The intensity of fermentation declines significantly with increasing content of dry matter (DM) in wilted grass forage. Compared with the preservation of fresh herbage, the nutrient losses in wilted silage are significantly lower, but this applies only to DM levels up to 368,81 g per kg. Above this limit content of DM, the losses of nutrients rapidly increase and at the DM content 453,6 g per kg the nutrient losses are practically as high as in fresh silage. Increase in DM content had a significant influence on the increase in pH and reduced the content of lactic acid. Acetic acid content continued to decline until the DM content reached 453,63 g per kg. Above this level the content of acetic acid increased, probably owing to the activity of thermophilous bacteria Coli-aerogenes. The highest nutrient digestibility was recorded at the DM content 313,5 g per kg. The level 313,5 g per kg should be regarded as an optimum DM content for production efficacy in the given type of stand and at the given fertilization rates.
