Water Requirement of Sesame and Groundnut in the Middle Awash and Gode Regions

Sesame and groundnut are grown under irrigation and adapted to both main and off season in the middle Awash region. Recommended seasonal water regime for sesame is 450 mm, every 21 days until 63 days, after sowing. Border, basin and furrow methods of water application did not significantly affect yield. At Gode Research Station, however, a 100-150 mm water applied every 14 days gave significantly higher yields. It was found that the potential water use of sesame was 474.9 mm in 15 June and 353-369 in 8 November. The actual water use by the crop was 451 and 460 mm for the 15 June planting and 353-369 mm for the 8 November on Fluvisols and Vertisols, respectively. The actual irrigation requirement was in the order of 195 (June) and 280 mm (November), and the balance is compensated by effective rainfall. The irrigation water regime study on groundnut indicated that 150 mm at plant establishment and 125 mm successive irrigation every 21 days up to 120 days after planting was optimum in the Middle Awash region. The irrigation schedule practiced at present, water use by crop, was 654.5 mm per growing season on Vertisols and 671.2 mm Fluvisols. The potential crop water use was the same, 690.6 mm, on both soil types. The actual irrigation requirement of the crop during the growing seasons was 342.3 mm on Fluvisols and 359.3 mm on Vertisols; the deficit moisture was compensated by effective rainfall.
