For 3 years (1987, 1988, 1989) studies were made on the effect of polythene covering without frames, polythene tunnels, polythene tunnels + energy umbrella, double polythene tunnel made of transparent polythene, and the same + energy umbrella on the earliness of the melon varieties Javitott Zentai, Magyar Kincs and Muskotaly, and the watermelon varieties Szigetcsepi 51 F1, Hevesi FUTO F1, Gomb FUTO F1 and H-8 F1. Plants covered by polythene were well able to survive occasional spells of -3 or -4 C degrees, during the 30-31 days examined (from late March to late April) covered plants were at a 35-40 o/o higher temperature than the control. The various types of covering produced similar results, but differences were found between the varieties. Hungaria 8 F1 produced a lower yield than the other varieties, while Szigetcsepi 51 F1, Hevesi FUTO F1 and Gomb FUTO F1 gave appr. the same yield. For melons, covering had a very good effect on the fruit number, particularly in Magyar Kincs while Javitott Zentai produced the greatest weight.
