Effect of N deficiency and ways of eliminating its consequences in peppermint.

In pot experiments continued for 2 years, studies were made on the effect of deficient N supplies on peppermint. In order to eliminate the consequences of N deficiency, the first nutrient solution applied after the full development of deficiency symptoms contained triple the control rate of N and was denoted "N excess treatment". After the 1st cutting, the N rate in the nutrient solution was reduced to the control level. As the result of the N excess treatment designed to eliminate the deficiency symptoms, an improvement was noted by the 5th day after treatment. The plants grew considerably taller (by 62,6 o/o) than in the case of total N deficiency by the 1st cutting, and by the 2nd cutting they had surpassed the values obtained for plants suffering from partial N deficiency. The leaf length also increased substantially, the herba weight increased to almost 7 times and the folium yield to almost 6 times. The considerable rise in yield and essential oil content confirms that the consequences even of severe N deficiency can succesfully be corrected.
