Role of "year effect" and lopping on the variability of quality in artificially dried tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.).

Gondola, I.
The influence of year and lopping on leaf yield and variabilities in the chemical composition of the leaf was studied over a period of 3 years in the Virginia tobacco variety Nyirsegi 76. A close, direct relationship was found between climatic conditions, yield and quality. The greatest changes were observed for carbohydrate content, followed by alkaloid and total N content. As the results of lopping, there was a significant increase in the alkaloid content of the leaves and a smaller increase in the carbohydrate content, while the total N content remained constant. No year effect x lopping interaction was observed. The quality analyses indicated that the alkaloid and total N content of tobacco leaves were influenced by differences in environmental and growing conditions. The carbohydrate content exhibited a closer negative correlation with total N than with alkaloid content.
