Analysis of minor components in vegetable oils

Not saponifiable parts of various rape-seed oil samples ("DO" pressed and extracted oil, pressed and extracted oils with high erucic acid content, oil extracted from various seed varieties), and of sunflower, maize germ, olive and linseed oil were analysed by gas chromatography on HP-17 fused silica column, as trimethyl-silyl derivative. In order to separate the different compound groups of the unsaponifiable part a new, low-pressure column chromatographic method was elaborated. It was found that the sterine composition of the different vegetable oils, similarly to the fatty acid composition, was characteristic of the oil. In all oils the sitosterol content was the highest, the sunflower, linseed and olive oil did not contain brassicasterol and x1, nor did the maize germ oil contain brassicasterol. The conventional rape-oil contains considerable quantities of campesterol (31.6) and brassicasterol (13.2), the linseed oil contains campesterol (14.7) and stigmasterol (12.7).
