Effect of soybean planting dates and corn population on land productivity of intercropping soybean and corn

Experiment was carried out in Maros Experimental Farm of Maros Research Institute for Food Crops (MORIF), during dry season 1987. Randomized complete block design was used with three replications, plot size was 5 m x 8 m. Soybean planting dates consisted of three different planting dates, i.e., 15 days before corn was being planted (T-15), the same time of corn (T-O), and 15 days delayed than, corn (T + 15). Plant populations of corn in the intercropping system were 20,000; 25,000; 30,000 and 35,000 plants/ha respectively. When soybean was intercropped with corn, yield was decreased compared to that of planting as monocropped. However, to reduce those yields reduction, soybean should be planted 15 days earlier than corn, combined with 35.000 plants/ha of corn. This combination produced the highest value in intercropping system, i.e. Rp. 2,138,000/ha and gave land equivalent ratio of 1.07.
