Soil moisture storage and depletion as influenced by fall tillage practices and fertilizer rates for wheat production in the Mushaqqar region

A study was carried out at the Mushaqqar Agricultural Experimental Station, to determine the effect of: 1. fall chiselling followed by sweep cultivation vs. moldboard plowing, and 2. nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer application on soil moisture storage and depletion and wheat yield. There were no significant differences in soil moisture storage during the growing season between the chisel and moldboard plow tillage treatments (376 and 387 mm respectively). Chiselling followed by sweep and moldboard plowing resulted in the same amount of soil moisture depletion by wheat during the growing season (378 and 377 mm). Depletion was significantly higher, however, in fertilized than in unfertilized wheat treatments (394 and 360 mm). Wheat grain yields were not significantly different between the chisel and moldboard plow treatments (2.67 and 2.78 Mg/ha). Yields were significantly higher, however, in fertilized than in unfertilized plots (3.21 and 2.24 Mg/ha)
