This manual is a practical guide to the technology supporting the Integrated Cereal/Livestock Farming System. It is designed to present a concise and factual reference for the extension officers, student and farmer alike. The system basically involves growing cereal crops in rotation with forage legumes i.e. one year forage, next year cereal, etc....The forage legumes are eaten by the livestock, thereby increasing total farm production. The livestock serve to recycle the nutrients from the legume phase, which leads to improving soil fertility (added nitrogen fixed by the legume) as well as improving soil structure and overall organic matter levels. The cereals benefit from this improved soil conditions and over time, cereal yields gradually improve. Integrated Cereal/Livestock Farming Systems are most easily understood by separating them into two types; The Sown Forage Legume System where a forage legume is sown each year in a cereal/legume rotation and the Ley Farming System where a pasture regenerates naturally in between each year of cereal. This manual can be used as an aid in transferring this information from the academic and scientific institutions through the extension officers and students to the farms of Jordan. It concentrates mostly on the new technologies associated with culture and management of forage legumes and less on established cereal and livestock technology
