Main objective of this phase of the project was to transfer to farmers, through field demonstrations, the technology, developed during the previous phases. Important activity was seed multiplication of lentil and chickpea varieties, developed and released by the project. Field demonstration and seed multiplication were executed by using "Full Technology package" developed by the project. It included: use of chisel plow and sweep for land and seedbed preparation; use of grain drill for seeding and fertilizing; use of roller for leveling soil surface and pushing stones into the soil thus facilitating the mechanical harvest; use of improved lentil and chickpea varieties; early sowing; use of recommended types and rates of fertilizers. Other promising technology components, evaluated on the small scale on the farmer fields, were herbicides for broad and narrow leaf weeds (especially pre-emergent). Sitona and Bruchus control; mechanical harvest techniques. "Minimum Input of Technology" was another important type of demonstration aiming to compare improved varieties with local ones with and without fertilizers. Learning about the adoption rate of the technology based on its social and economic benefits on the farmers, was made possible through three socioeconomic studies. In addition, lentil and chickpea breeding program, training, workshops, field days, visits and extension services were among the other different activities of the legume project during the 1990 - 1991 season which marked the third phase of the third season of the Food Legume Project.
