Investigation of wind damage to sugar beets [Beta vulgaris], 1: Growing process, root yield and sugar yield of sugar beets in damaged plots and seedling replanted plots

There occurred a considerably strong wind damage to sugar beets in Shimizu area in May 1987. To study the effects of wind damage, there were selected three trial plots, in which the crop was not damaged, damaged to some extent, and complemented by transplanting. Studies were made on several items, including growing process, root yield and sugar content. The results are summarized as follows. 1) In a subplot of the damaged plot, where about 10% of the plants had been killed, the surviving plants showed a good regrowth and finally attained a sugar production being only 5-15% lower than that for the retransplanted plot. 2) In another subplot of the damaged plot, where 60-70% of plants had been killed by two successive wind attacks, the production of sugar was a decline of about 30% below the retransplanted plot
