The role of total nitrogen content of leaves in temperature sensitivity of barley cultivars to Puccinia hordei and changes in composition that occurs during development of the pathogen

The total nitrogen content of healthy and infected barley leaves with three different races of Puccinia hordei Otth. were determind by micro-kjeldahl method. The barley cultivars namely; cv. Cebada Capa carrying the Pa 7 resistant gene is susceptible to race F, BRS76.12 and BR/Est at 5 degree Celsius and resistant at 25 degree Celsius, cv.CI 1243 carrying Pa9 resistant gene is susceptible at higher temperature (25 degree celsius) and resistant at 5 degree celsius and cv. Rikal carrying the Pa2 gene is temperature insensitive and susceptible to these races at all temperatures, were used in this investigation. The results indicated that the percentage nitrogen (total) content of cv. Cebada Capa leaves was greater than that of CI 1243 when plants were grown at 26 degree Celsius and 5 degree Celsius and it was concluded that the nitrogen content determined as total nitrogen has no role in temperature sensitivity of barley cultivars. The nitogen content of infected leaves when incubated at 26 degree celsius and 5 degree celsius indicated that, in most cases, the nitogen content of infected leaves was greater than that of healthy control especially in susceptible cultivars
