Root characters of eight drought-resistant Aus and Hill rices from Bangladesh, one drought-resistant check (OS4), and one susceptible check (IR20) were studied under aeroponic culture system, to identify root characters that directly contribute to drought resistance and that can be used as selection indices. The study showed a positive association between drought resistance and root length, root thickness, number of xylem vessels, and xylem vessel area. A negative association was observed between root number and drought resistance. Path coefficient analysis showed that root thickness and xylem vessel number directly and positively contributed to drought resistance. Thick roots and many xylem vessels can be useful criteria in selecting for drought resistance.
