Seed density in relation to seeding quality and crop establishment in Oryza sativa L.

Ten rice cultivars with known high density grain index were separated into high density (HD) seed (specific gravity greater than or equal to 1.20) and low density (LD) seed (specific gravity 1.05-1.20). Different growth parameters were studied using HD and LD seeds in the laboratory and field. The study verified the advantages of using HD seeds which generally had higher percent germination, germination coefficient, and seedling vigor than LD seeds in all cultivars. The electrical conductivity (EC) of seed leachate in LD grains was 69% higher than that of HD grains. The germination, length, and weight of root and shoot were significantly lower in seeds with higher EC. Leaf area and mean relative growth rate were lower in LD seeds than in HD seeds. Under field conditions, seedlings from HD seeds were taller, had more tillers, and had higher CGR [Crop Growth Rate], LAI [leaf area index] and weight. By using HD seeds, seedling growth can be increased by 25-50%. It can also reduce seeding rate and ensure better crop establishment.
