Agronomic responses of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) to varying levels of shade

A study to determine the responses of sweet potato to varying levels of shade was conducted at the University of the Philippines, College, Laguna [Philippines]. The cultivars UPL Sp-1, BPI Sp-2 and VSp-1, varying in certain traits, were used. The study was conducted as a multi-environment experiment with O (full sunlight), 31, 43, 52, and 67% shading treatments as environments. Coconut palms imposed the 43% shade while the other shade levels were obtained by putting layers of fish nets. Relative to full sunlight, shading by 31 to 67% reduced root fresh weight, root bulking rate, root dry matter content and fresh vine yield by 5 to 96 %. Differential response of the varieties were obtained at 0, 31, and 43% but all responded similarly at 67% shade. The results suggest that under partial shade and stable environmental conditions and where translocation of photosynthate to the tuberous roots is not severely limited, root fresh weight, root bulking rate and fresh vine yield may be used as selection criteria for high and tuberous root yield under partial shade
