Density and length of leaf hairs, number of gossypol glands, plant height, maturity (number of days from planting to 50% flowering and flossing) and tannin content of leaves varied significantly among the cotton varieties studied but not leaf color and shape, presence of nectar glands, petal and pollen color, petal spot and presence of frego-bracts. Bollworm resistance was consistently associated with earliness as indicated by fewer days from planting to 50% flowering and flossing. High correlation coefficient values indicate plant characters like short stature, presence of gossypol glands and tannin content but with few varietal exceptions. This indicates that these characters do not act independently and their effect on bollworm reaction is conditioned by the presence or absence of other characters.
