Young cob corn production as influenced by planting density and detasseling

A study was conducted to determine the effects of planting density and detasseling on the production of young cob or "baby" corn. Three varieties were used namely, IPB Var 1, Pioneer Hybrid 3228 and Super Sweet cv. Azukar. Yield and quality of young cob corn were analyzed and compared. Increasing the planting density from 80,000 plants per hectare to 140,000 resulted in 30 per cent higher yields in terms of total and marketable-size young cob or baby corn. Expression of prolificacy as measured by the number of ears per plant, length and diameter of fresh product was not affected. Removal of the tassels or detasseling slightly improved yield of young cob corn by enhancing the expression of prolificacy in all the varieties used. Detasseling significantly improved the yield of marketable-size ears but did not affect the average length and diameter of the harvested young cob corn. Super Sweet cv. Azukar gave the highest yield of marketable-size young cob corn at 1.0 ton of fresh product using a density of 140,000 plants per hectare.
