Demalibot, J.M.C.
The effect of Cucurma domestica Valet. (syn. Cucurma longa) crude extract on the reproduction of albino rats was evaluated. The effects of the crude extract on male and female reproductive performance and its toxic effects on other reproductive parameters (vis: sperm counts, sperm morphology, sperm motility, histology, fetal malformation) organ and bodyweights were evaluated. The crude extract of Cucurma domestica V. was found to cause significant influence in the rate of body weight increase of treated male rats but not among female rats. There was a significant decrease of sperm motility and counts and a higher percentage of abnormal sperm among male rats given the high and moderate doses. The weights of the accessory glands of treated male rats were significantly higher than those of the control. There was no effect, however, on breeding performance and blood counts of treated rats. Among females, the crude extract caused significant resorption of embryos and decreased the number of surviving pups. It also significantly decreased ovarian weights. Increasing adrenal gland weights of treated females, was also found. The extract exerted no major teratogenic effect on the offsprings of treated pregnant dams. The test material, however, exhibited some signs of being maternally toxic; this was manifested by wavy ribs and some fused eternal bones.
