Potato apical cuttings: a promising tool for evaluation breeding materials

In potato, among the alternative planting material to tuber seed is apical cuttings. Apical cuttings can be rapidly multiplied and this technique could be adopted by small farmers in both cool and warm climates. This study was conducted to evaluate potato breeding materials. Trials were conducted at Sayangan, Atok (2200 m asl) from February to May 1991 and at Canlubang (150 m asl) from December 1990 to March 1991, representing a cool and warm location, respectively. Facts indicate that apical cuttings is a promising tool for germplasm evaluation. First, clones grown from apical cuttings could be discriminated based on tuber yield. Second, it allows a rapid and timely increase of new clones for simultaneous evaluation at different locations. In addition, it could be useful to predict yields from a tuber seed grown crop although this hypothesis needs further study.
