The two-year (1989-90) experiments concerned the following cultivars: Osttergruss Rozowa and Japanese radish Tokinashi (early cultivars), and Monachijska Biala and Murzynka (late cultivars). Three sowing dates were applied: early spring (first decade of April), early summer (second decade of June) and late summer (third decade of July). Considerable differences in chemical composition between two radish groups were observed. The early cultivars had low dry matter, crude fibre, and isothiocyanate levels but a fairly high content of vitamin C. The late cultivars had approximately twice as great dry weight and contained considerable amounts of isothiocyanates, crude fibre, protein, and macroelements (except for potassium). The early radishes reached the highest biological value in crops from the April sowing, the late radishes sown in July gave material of better storage ability
