Wheat production technologies in Kenya: A diagnostic analysis of the major characteristics and constraints to productivity growth

Traditionally, wheat has been produced in large-scale farming systems in Kenya. However, since the attainment of independence in 1963, several institutional and economic policy reforms have taken place and have led to a major structural change in the country's wheat supply sector. Redistribution of land, for instance, has resulted in sub-division of many large scale wheat farms into smaller holdings, and the number of small-holder wheat farms has been increasing ever since. Due to wide variation in the socio-economic and agro-climatic circumstances under which small farmers operate, there are significant differences in their ability to adopt large- scale wheat technologies. A diagnostic survey was carried out in 1990/91 to characterize the wheat production technologies currently employed by small and large-scale farmers in different agro-climatic zones. The survey data were used to compare farmer and technology characteristics in these regions and to explain patterns of adoption amongst the various wheat farming groups. The study also assesses technical inefficiencies, and identifies barriers to productivity growth and the diffusion of improved production practices amongst wheat farmers. The results provide an information base enabling researchers to adapt technology to suit farmers' circumstances, and for policy makers to design appropriate policies to relax and/or remove the constraints hindering increased wheat production
