Alpha-amylase activity and falling number in complete and substituted triticales

Hexaploid triticales (X Triticosecale Wittmack) of the 19th International Triticale Yield and Screening Nurseries (ITYN, ITSN) were grown at Narrabri in 1988. Falling number (FN) and a-amylase activity (AAA) were assayed in harvested grains of all lines in both nurseries and changes in AAA during grain development was assessed in the ITYN lines. The mature grains of substituted triticales exhibited a higher mean FN and thus a lower AAA than complete triticales, which in turn had a higher coefficient of variation. Abnormally high levels of AAA in the absence of visible sprouting occurred in some genotypes of both groups. During sequential harvests mean AAA remained at a low level in substituted triticales and increased in completes. Genetic variability for AAA was high during the last stages of grain development and seemed to offer sufficient scope to select for different levels of AAA in both chromosome constitution groups. All substituted triticales were of the 2D(2R) type and contained the 6R chromosome, which has been implicated in high AAA. The mechanism involved in late maturity AAA in triticales is not clear
