Most soils in Southern Brazil do not present sufficient available nitrogen (N) for adequate small grain production. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of N fertilization on triticale yield and to improve N recommendation for this crop. Seven experiments were carried out during the years of 1986, 1987 and 1988, in Passo Fundo and Lagoa Vermelha, State of Rio Grande do Sul. A randomized complete block experimental design, arranged as a split-plot with four replications, was utilized. Cultivars were main plots and N rates were sub-plots. Organic matter content of the soils ranged from 3.0 to 6.6 percent. Differences between cultivars were significant at six sites. In all experiments, significant yield increases were observed up to 80 kg N/ha. In soils with organic matter lower than 3.7 percent, increases in yield were significant up to 120 kg N/ha. Regression analysis for yield as a function of N rates and soil organic matter allowed us to adjust N recommendations as a function of soil organic matter and different nitrogen to grain price ratios
