Alectra vogelii has recently been identified as a problem in Embu district, Kenya. A brief survey was conducted to assess the extent and current farmer response. The farmers had no indigenous form of control. An on farm trial was established using a susceptible cowpea (K80) in four treatments; manure application (16 t/ha), hand pulling, a trat crop (guar) and a control. After the first season (April 90) no significant differences were seen in either the number of Alectra stems//cowpea stem, nor in the final cowpea grain yeild. In the second season (Nov 90) the guar appeared to sensitise the Alectra; 60 (%) more Alectra stems/cowpea stem were present in the trap crop treatment compared to the control. Observation plots were established. Alectra parasitises a wide range of legumes. Two cowpeas provenances from Botswana appear resistant. The trial is to be continued, in addition guar is to be investigated further by varying the spatial density. Late planting appears to avoid heavy Alectra infestation
