Growth and yield of two groundnut cultivars as affected by succinic acid 2,2-dimethylhydrazide

Two experiments were conducted at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center in dry and wet seasons of 1986 to study the effects of different rates (1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 kg.ai/ha.) and times (30, 40, and 50 days after emergence) of SADH application on growth and yield of two recommended groundnut cultivars SK 38 and Tainan 9. All SADH sprayed treatments reduced groundnut growth by decreasing plant height and reducing leaf area index and subsequently decreasing plant dry weight. After each SADH spray, its effect on growth retardation lasted about 20 days. Therefore, early spraying allowed the plants to regrow in the late stage resulting in some reduction in seed yield. Sprayings at 40 and 50 days reduced LAI during the period of highest LAI, thus, increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis and reducing mutal shading. As a consequence, high seed yields were obtained. In the dry season, high early rains occurred and the plants continued to grow until the grain filling period. Thus, seed yields of the SADH applied plants were not different from those of the control. However, in the wet season, the highest seed yields were obtained when 1.2 kg.ai/ha. of SADH was sprayed at 50 days after emergence for SK 38 and 1.8 kg.ai/ha. was applied at 40 DAE for Tainan 9.
