Study on the improvement of peanut quality

Quality of peanuts in Thailand varies greatly depending on planting locations, peanut varieties and postharvest practices employed by farmers. A study was conducted in 1986 on the improvement of peanut quality. The process included grading and packaging. A total of 247.39 kg. of fresh shelled peanuts was bought from farmers in Rayong Province. The pods were sun dried for 4 days, at 7 hours a day and moisture content droped to 5 %. Weight lost was about 30 %. Rotten pods and immature pods were picked out before shelling. After shelling, 89 kg. of unshelled peanuts were obtained. The cost of unshelled peanuts was calculated at 29.6 baht/kg. compared to 10.7 baht/kg. of fresh inshelled peanuts. The kernels were graded into large, medium, and shrivelled grades by passing through standard screens. The procedure of improving peanut quality is thought to be useful for pricing and utilization of peanut. The use of moisture and air-proof packaging enables peanuts to be kept for a year.
