Efficacy of salinomycin and monensin in the prevention of coccidiosis in broilers raised under commercial conditions

Investigations on the efficacy and performance of salinomycin 60 ppm in comparison to monensin 100 ppm as the anticoccidial agent were undertaken. A total of 16,000 Arbor Acres birds were divided into eight pens and the trial termination were on days 49 and 53 for male and female birds respectively. The findings indicated that feed conversion ratio (FCR) of birds treated with salinomycin was better than those treated with monensin (2.14 vs.2.18; p0.01). Examination of a representative sample of 13 birds of each pen at the age of 22 and 35 days for intestinal lesion scores was also performed. At the age of 35 days,lesion scores at the upper intestine and the caecum of birds treated with monensin were significantly higher than those treated with salinomycin birds, 0.33 VS.0.00 (p0.05) and 0.69 vs. 0.29 (p0.01) respectively, but not at 22 days.
