Effects of compost on corn charcoal stalk rot and its causal organism, Macrophomina phaseolina

Research on the effects of compost on corn charcoal rot and on the pathogen, Macrophomina phaseolina, in soil was conducted at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Nakornrachasrima Province. That compost played a prominent role on improving soil conditions as well as soil biochemical and physical properties. Compost application at the rate of 4 tons/rai increased soil nutrients especially available phosphorus in soil from 93.3-94.0 ppm to 146.0-160.6 ppm. Furthermore, it appeared to increase pH level and moisture contents of soil. It is interesting to mention that it also decreased the number of soil-borne plant pathogens, especially on M. phaseolina population and the severity of disease, charcoal rot disease. In addition to this, compost application showed effect in yield increase.
