Effects of storage conditions on quality of peanut seed

Seed stored under ambient conditions maintained satisfactory germination for only five months. In contrast, seed stored under both controlled conditions still showed good germination, with no pronounced decrease, after ten months of storage. Seed vigor decreased under all storage conditions. The fastest reduction occurred in seed stored under ambient condition. Seed stored under 20 deg Celsius (50-60 % RH) showed a slightly greater reduction in vigor than seed stored under 15 deg Celsius (50-60 % RH.). The seed moisture content increased to an unsafe level for maintaining good seed quality in seed stored under ambient conditions. Whereas moisture content in seed stored under the two controlled conditions remained at a safe level during the entire storage period. Most of the fungi found on the seed in all storage conditions were Aspergillus niger and A. flavus. Differences in quantity and kind of fungi showed no relationship with storage conditions.
