Sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata Rondani (Muscidae: Diptera) is an important pest of sorghum in the seedling stage. The larvae of the fly feed within the growing point of the young shoot causing deadheart symptom. Field studies were carried out at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, in 1986-1987. The results of the estimation of yield and economic losses caused by different levels of shoot fly infestation of three recommended sorghum varieties, Uthong 1, KU.439 and KU.8501, by using carbofuran granule at the planting time at 1.9 kg. ai/ha. showed that the sorghum damaged at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks old could produce effective tiller 14.18, 71.77, 82.44 and 77.78 % respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between percentage deadhearts and yield losses. For each 1 % increase in deadhearts, there was about 0.63 % in yield losses. Efficacy of some insecticides was evaluated in the field for the control of shoot fly on the sorghum KU.439 showed that the infestation in untreated plot was highest when the plant was two weeks old. For reducing shoot fly attack and for improving the grain yield at an infestation level of 75 % ranged from 50 % to 75 % at this growth stage, a single spray application of carbosulfan at 0.25 kg. ai/ha. at one week old of sorghum in the farmer field and applying terbufos granule at sowing at 1.9 kg. ai/ha. in the experimental field were effective in controlling this pest.
