In 1985, a new variety (ROC 9) originated from Taiwan Republic of China was collected from the growers field in Ban Pong Rajburi Province. The total number of commercial cultivars collected up till now is 281. As regards wild sugarcane germplasm as well as related genera, only 83 accessions were maintained at Kamphaengsaen Campus. These included 73 of Saccharum spontaneum, 5 of Erianthus spp. and 5 of Scherostachya spp. Identification, characterization and evaluation of these accessions will be made in the future. During 1985-1986 crossing season, 107 bi-parental crosses were made with the total number of 249 female arrows. This number was 109 crosses less than that of the previous year. Parents that failed to produce viable seeds after crossing were discarded in order to reduce the work and the budget. Further studies will be made to find out the cause of failure. Yield trials of new hybrids are under study at Kamphaensaen Campus and in the farmer's field. Clones that show better performance than the check F 140 variety will be named Kps.
