Yield loss of recommended baby corn varieties cause by corn stemborer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee')

Study on the yield loss of baby corn caused by the corn stem borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) in 1987 and 1988 was done by chemical spraying when the growing plants are 10, 17, 24 and 30 days old respectively. The infestation in the insecticide-treated plots averaged 0.68-0.94 holes per plant. The average damaged ear was 0.61-1.42 % which differed only slightly from the control plot which had 1.75 holes per plant and 2.11 percent damaged ears. The experiment of 1988 gave the same result. The infestation in every plot averaged 0.30-0.68 holes per plant, while the average damaged ear was 1.9-3.3 %. Investigation on the susceptibility to corn stem borer infestation of five recommended baby corn varieties wes conducted at Amphur Dumnersaduak, Ratchaburi Province in 1988. Rungsit 1, Suwan 3 and Thai Supersweet Co. 1 DMR had on the average 0.29, 0.37 and 0.37 holes per plant respectively, indication that these varieties were more resistant to the corn stem borer infestation than Thai Co. 1 DMR had an average of 0.66 and 1.04 holes per plant respectively. The incidences of damaged ears were not, significantly different among the varieties, but Rungsit 1, Thai Co. 1 DMR and Thai Supersweet Co. 1 DMR gave good yields of husked ears at 1270.8, 1136.1 and 1136.2 kg. per rai respectively and dehusked of marketable size at 227.6, 205.9, 195.3 kg. per rai respectively.
