Responses of groundnut cultivar Tainan 9 to different methods of rhizobium inoculation in an after-rice, unirrigated condition

Experiment was conducted at Ban Samjan during the dry season of 1985/86 with the aim to evaluate the responses of groundnut cultivar Tainan 9 to different methods of Rhizobium inoculation in an after-rice unirrigated condition. The treatments were essentially the same as in the 1985 rainy season experiment. Differences among treatments were statistically significant for numbers of hill emerged at 15 DAP, nodule dry weight, numbers of hill harvested, numbers of plant harvested, and dry stover yields. Inoculation using adhesive stickers and uninoculated control had lower numbers of hill emerged, numbers of hill harvested, and numbers of plant harvested than other treatments, indicating a favourable effects of other treatments on seed germination. This might be due to the moisture content in the Rhizobium spreading agents at the time of sowing. No significant difference among treatments was observed for the rest of the parameters measured. However, nodule dry weight, N2-ase activity, and plant dry weight at 60 DAP tended to be higher for those treatments that had lower plant population. This may be attributed to compensation effect within groundnut plants. Significant differences among treatments were observed for dry stover yields but not for dry pod yields. Uninoculated control treatment had the lowest dry stover yield while Rhizobium inoculation using manure as a spreading agent had the highest dry stover yield.
