Toxicity of systemic insecticides against the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rond. (Muscidae: Diptera)

Sorghum variety, KU.439 was sown at Suwan Farm, Nakornrajasima province. There are two methods of insecticides applications. The first consists of three systemic insecticides applied as seed furrow at the rate of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 kg./ha. while the second comprises two systemic insecticides applied as foliage spray at the rate of 0.05, 0.075 and 1.0 % for cabofuran and 0.09 and 0.18 % for monocrotophos. The observations were made for dead heart counts at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after sowing. For the first, second, third and fourth readings, it was revealed that carbofuran at the rate of 1.0 kg./ha. gave the best control followed by thiofanox and isazophos at 7 days while it was followed by isazophos and thiofanox at 14, 21 and 28 days after planting. Thiofanox at the highest rate gave the best control followed by isazophos and carbofuran. For the foliage spray, carbofuran at concentration of 0.10 % gave the best result and was different from monocrotophos at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after sowing.
