Eight surface soil samples collected from different rice growing areas of Bangladesh were used to study the relationship between phosphorus sorption capacity and active iron, manganese, calcium and clay content. Results show that the sorption capacity of the soils varies from 3 to 13 ppm at 20 ppm added P. Correlation studies show that the P sorption capacity of soils was closely correlated with Fe(D) (4 = 0.81) and clay content (r - 0.78) followed by Ca (4 = 0.65) and pH (4 = 0.64). The multiple regression equation (P sorption Ps = - 3.83 + 14.03 Fe(D) + 0.16 clay, R2 = 0.82) suggested that the active Fe and clay contents of soil play an important role in P sorption capacity of soil.
