Studies on the improvement in the current practice of softening and piling of jute cuttings: development of a built-in piling unit [in Bangladesh]

For proper softening of jute cuttings, a laboratory scale apparatus was built, using locally available accessories. It eliminated moisture and temperature gradients during softening. In each experiment 30 kg samples with 35% emulsion were put into the piling unit. It was continued for a period of four days. Hot or cold blast of air was forced into the pile atmosphere when necessary. Humidity and temperature were maintained at 30% and 65 deg. C respectively. This prompted pectiolytic thermophilic bacterial activity throughout the piling operation. Copper number, pH of water extract, carboxyl content, softening activity and bundle strength of the resulting cuttings were normal. Recycling of pile atmosphere enhanced uniform softening of jute cuttings compared to conventional practices.
