The effects of a tiller inhibiting gene on yield and yield components in irrigated and rainfed wheat [in Bangladesh]

Studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of determinant vs. multitillering wheat lines under irrigated and rainfed conditions. The multi-tillering (M) lines produced significantly higher number of fertile as well as infertile tillers than the determinant-tillering (D) lines in both water regimes. Grain yield did not differ significantly between the two tillering groups under irrigated conditions. Under rainfed conditions, the D lines exhibited a significant yield advantage over the M lines. Total dry matter production or biological yield was significantly higher for the M lines while number of kernels/spikelet and harvest index were higher for the D lines. Higher seeding rate of the D lines did not have any significant influence on grain yield under irrigated conditions while under rainfed conditions it decreased yield significantly.
