Supplementary feeding of laying ducks under scavenging condition [in Bangladesh]

Thirty small farmers having 3-7 ducks each were selected of which ducks of 15 farmers were fed 50 per cent of their total requirement as supplementary feeding (T1). The rest 15 farmers were allowed to scavenge their ducks without supplementation (T2). The production performances of ducks were studied up to one year of age. Number of eggs laid per duck was 137.40 and 41.86 in T1 and T2. Duck-day and duck house egg production were 66.50, 17.82 and 64.89, 15.72 per cent for T1 and T2, respectively. Age at 1st lay were 152.87 and 210.29 days in T1 and T2 and age at 50% of egg production in T1 and T2 were 165.62 and 219.71 days, respectively. Mortality was found 12.50 and 17.83 per cent in T1 and T2, respectively. Egg weight was 59.03 g and 56.83 g for T1 and T2, respectively. Significant differences (P0.05) were observed in all the parameters except mortality and egg weight. It was concluded that the supplementary feeding of indigenous laying ducks would increase egg production under village scavenging condition.
