Effect of direct seeding and late season transplanting on wheat [in Bangladesh]

Fifteen-day old seedlings of wheat (var. Kanchan) were transplanted on 15 December during the winter seasons of 1986-87 and 1987-88 to assess performance of wheat as a transplanted crop under delayed planting in irrigated situations. The transplanted crop was compared to the crop raised by seeding directly on 15 November, 1 December and 15 December. Crop sown on 15 November and 1 December generally produced higher grain and straw yields than that of 15 December sowing. The yield components were affected similarly. Spikes/m(2), number of grains/spike and grain weight were more on earlier sowings than that in late sowing on 15 December. Transplanted wheat produced 16% more grain yield than that from direct seeding on 15 December. The increase in yield from transplanting was due to increase in number of grains per spike and grain weight. Two years' data indicated that transplanting wheat might be a viable alternative to direct sowing under late planting situations.
