In a study 131 F3 single lines of barley developed from the crosses Tochi-kei-140 x Tochi-kei 133 and Tochi-kei 140 x Nitta-Kei 10 were evaluated for high yield, good malting qualities and resistibility to barley yellow mosaic virus. Plant height, culm length, number of spikes/plant, grain weight/plant and 1000-kernel weight decreased significantly in the susceptible lines compared to the resistant lines for both the combinations. Ten resistant lines from the first cross and 13 from the second having good plant type, yellowish white grain, finely wrinkled husk, and larger than 2.5 mm seeds were selected for malting quality test. Out of 10 lines from the first cross, 4 lines showed very good, 2 lines good, 3 lines medium and 1 line bad malting qualities. In the second cross, 1 line showed very good 4 lines good, 6 lines medium and 1 line bad malting qualities.
