Integrated control of Frankliniella occidentalis in UK cucumber crops: use of Anthocoris nemorum

A small experimental crop of cucumber plants, grown according to the techniques commonly employed in the North of England was inoculated with Frankliniella occidentalis at the rate of 23 per plant during a 6 week period in May -June 1990. These insects were allowed to produce 2-3 generations of offspring giving rise to a population of 60-80 larvae per leaf. Adults Anthocoris nemorum were then released in the crop at the rate of 4 per plant. After this release the number of Frankliniella occidentalis continued to increase for a few days but stabilized at about 100 larvae per leaf and then fell rapidly; with the result that after 10 weeks there were fewer than 10 F. occidentalis larvae per leaf. The predators bred successfully in the crop and there was at least a 3 fold increase in their numbers by the end of August. There were added benefits from their presence because they also fed on other cucumber pests, notably aphids and spider mites. Initial attempts to mass rearing of A. nemorum have proved to be difficult due both to their cannibalistic tendencies and to a diapause which is not yet fully understood.
