Pea plants cv. Ran-1 were grown as hydroponics in Knopp's solution with 2, 4, 6 and 10 times increased nitrate content as compared to the control. After 2 weeks the plants accumulated NO3- in their leaves in accordance with the growing concentrations in the nutritient medium. As a result of that their protein and pigment content was increased. Notwithstanding that, when the leaves were in dark in a humid chamber of a thermostat at temperature 25 C for 3-4 days a faster ageing of the photosynthetic apparatus was observed which consisted in greater degradation of the pigments and activization of chlorophyllase in "nitrate" levels. Nitrate salinity had a particularly negative effect on chlorophyll b, its quality during plant growth was reduced and that was more pronounced in case the leaves were in the dark.
