Comparison of Black Friesian breed and Holstein x Friesian cross for milk and meat production in the tenth region (Chile)

The goal of this research was to compare milk yields, and reproductive and carcass traits, for Black Friesian (Fr) breed and Holstein 5 Friesian cross (Fr), based upon information gathered during the decade of 80's among commercial and experimental farms in the Tenth Region of Chile. Highly significant differences were observed for milk and fat yields in favor of the cross. The gap raised up to 1,000 kg of milk, and to 36 kg for fat, when feeding and management levels were improved. An overestimation of these productive differentials could exist due to the procedure used for dam selection, and to heterotic effects among the crossed population. The reproductive traits, such as the number of services per conception, calving to conception intervals, calving age, calving interval, and longevity, showed similar figure in both genetic strains. Concerning meat production, Fl steers showed higher slaughter and carcass weights than the Fr Steers (545 vs 599 kg; 317 vs 291 kg, respectively). However, the average dressing percentage was similar for both lines (56.5 vs 57.2%). F1 steers presented more bone and fat, which determines a commercial value, per carcass kilogram, 5.6% lower than Fr. Nevertheless, these values should not justify the high commercial discrimination which suffers F1 in the meat market. Concerning milk production, reproductive and carcass traits were similar to the values found in international literature
