Geographical distribution, biology and control of the cereal tortricid Cnephasia pumicana Zell. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) in Cyprus

The newly introduced cereal tortricid Cnephasia pumicana (Zell.) has already been established in most parts of the country. Infestation is particularly high in the Larnaca district, especially at sites close to established windbreaks. The pest has one generation per year. The first signs of larval infestation on barley and wheat appear during the tillering stage (early February to early March). The larvae complete their development in early April and the adults appear from the end of April to mid May. The insecticides chlorpyriphos, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, fenitrothion, fenvalerate and parathion+oil, applied either at the beginning of February (two weeks after first larval appearance) or three weeks later, gave excellent control of the larvae. Larval control is probably preferable to adult control because it is easier, less costly and less harmful to the ecological balance
