Pedological and mineralogical characterization of five Danish forest soils

Pedological and mineralogical investigations on five Danish forest soils (Stenholts Vang, Ulborg, I,indet, Klosterhede and Trinderup) have been carried out in order to improve and integrate the interpretation of results obtained during separate studies on the effects of air pollution and acid-base relations in soils. The soils from Ulborg and Klosterhede are strongly podzolized (Typic Haplohumod and Typic Haplorthod) sandy soils. They are acid, poor in bases, and the content of available nutrients is low. The mineralogy is characterized by relatively resistant minerals and strongly weathered clay minerals. The soil from Lindet is similar except for the weaker development (Typic Quartzipsamment). The soil from Trinderup is sandy, but contains sufficient clay and more easily weatherable minerals preventing podzolization (Psammentic Haplumbrept). The weathering is clearly more advanced in upper than deeper layers and consequently, the acidity is relatively high in the top horizon. The Stenholts Vang soil developed on loamy till exhibits clear clay migration (Typic Argiudoll). The content of relatively easily weatherable minerals is high and the weathering is only pronounced in the top horizon, resulting in a soil of low acidity and high content of available nutrients
