Growth models for tropical forests in Asean: some experience from peninsular Malaysia
1993
Shin, C.K.
The growth and yield estimation developed at the ASEAN Institute of Forest Management (AIFM) is to derive functions for the harvested and managed tropical forests that can be used in an inventory projection model. The main use of the inventory projection model is to enable forest managers to simulate stand growth for forests in the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) so that forests can be harvested on a sustainable yield basis. This paper uses Dipterocarp forests from Peninsular Malaysia as a case study and comments on the selection of the most appropriate management regime from the Selective Management System (SMS). Five growth models of different approaches were tested at AIFM. Some parameters can be precisely assessed but some are however subjected to considerable error due to certain constrains. The formulations of models were the results of AlFM's Growth and Yield research from 1988 to 1992
