Comparative analysis of two methods in propagation of Norway spruce by cuttings

The high cost of young plants is of essential disadvantage at the bulk propagation of Norway spruce by cuttings and at the cultivation of planting material from cuttings that became rooted. To reduce the cost price of young plants a possibly simple method for the propagation of spruce by cuttings was used in our trials. The cuttings were planted in a sandy-peaty (3:1) rooting medium in boxes covered with plastic either in a hothouse or plastic greenhouse, having no special equipments for the automatic regulation of microclimate of rooting medium. Under these conditions the rooting of cuttings obtained in spring was satisfactory one in 1985: the rooting of different clones was on an average up to 70%, while that of the best ones was 100%. In the years 1986 and 1987, when in the year preceding the collection of cuttings extreme deviations from the normal weather conditions (a surplus of precipitation in summer, prolonged very low air temperatures in winter) caused frost damages of mother trees, an essential extent lower, even below 30%. According to the trials in unfavourable years Norway spruce can be successfull propagated by cuttings collected in midsummer, after the growth of shoots was over
