The Psychosocial Consequences of Famine Experience and Resettlement: A Case Study on the Ethiopian Famine of 1983-84

The study examines the psychosocial consequences of famine experience in terms of loss of life, extent of food deprivation, and migration patterns in the wake of resettlement program launched by the Government of Ethiopia. Drifts in occupational patterns, changes in food habits and their phychological implications were also studied. Data for the study were collected by interviewing sampled households at Gambela and Metekel resettlement sites. Results obtained strongly suggest that the success of resettlement programes as well as other famine related strategies depends largely on due attention being accorded to the psychological aspects involved.
