Measurements on the water content and water status of canes to determine the frost resistance of a number of quality wine grape varieties

The dielectric constant indicative of water binding was studied in the xylem taken from cane sections between the 5th and 10th nodes in the T-68 clone of Rheinriesling and the varieties Pearl Riesling, Blaufrankisch and Zenit. Frost resistance is a function of this parameter. The frost resistance of Pearl Riesling proved to be even better than that of the very resistant variety Rheinriesling, Blaufrankisch has good and Zenit medium frost resistance. The state of the vineyard plays an important role in reducing frost damage, but differences in the growing site did not lead to differences in frost resistance. In vineyards with a good water supply, a slight water deficiency at the end of the vegetation period may improve frost resistance due to better water binding. An excessive bud load causes a substantial increase in frost damage. During the dormant period, changes in the water content of the canes can be attributed mainly to external factors, while the rhythmic fluctuations in their water status can be put down to endogenous causes
